Question of the Day

This question comes from Shar:

"Would any of the cards you have reviewed also work in Ireland and Sweden (I am planning a trip there in August). Thanks - Your site is GREAT!!!"

Thanks for kudos Shar. Feedback is great and appreciation is always welcome. Glad to here you're traveling.

I did a little digging to find the answer to your question and here's what I found. AT&T has roaming agreements for data across the globe.

With AT&T, you can get data coverage in both countries on a number of carriers. Here's where you can find specific rates and coverage for Ireland and Sweden. Upon checking the cards that AT&T are currently selling, the GT Ultra Express is capable of working on the networks in those countries. For a video/text review of 3 places where you can get it from check here.

Hope this helps!

Alltel expands EVDO Revision A network in Kansas

Freedom
As we spoke about in an earlier post, Alltel is rolling out EVDO Revision A in numerous places.

Wichita, Kansas also gets to hop on the 3G high speed bandwagon. As we said before, speeds are expected to go from EVDO Revision 0 speeds of 400-700 kbps to 600-1400 kbps on the downlink.

That's about twice the speed while price remains the same (phew).

Alltel Upgrading 3G Network to EVDO Rev. A

Falling right on the heels of an announced Verizon-Alltel merger, the 5th largest nationwide carrier has announced that it is upgrading its 3G network from EVDO Revision 0 to EVDO Revision A. Of course that only makes sense to do if they're really talking about merging the networks. To see how that puts them on par with Sprint and Verizon, compare the mobile broadband carriers.

Just what will become of Sprint who currently has a 10 year roaming contract with Alltel? Stay tuned...

Senators talk on 5-year ban on higher cell phone taxes

What does this have to do with Mobile Broadband you say? Just about EVERYTHING!!! I for one and loving this. It's pretty simple. Just about every company that provides mobile broadband is a cell phone company. They view broadband cards as cell phones that can only transfer data and no voice. End result? If this bill gets passed that means no higher taxes for 5 years.

Oh...you're still stuck with your current high taxes though. Click through for details.

T-Mobile with a 3G network by October?

Excitement is in the air for T-Mobile users (and fans) as they announced having tests of their 3G network by the summer. Sure enough they pulled it off in New York. No confirmation on how fast the speeds were yet. There are rumors floating around that they may go live nationwide by October 1st. If the speed is up to snuff, then it looks like Sprint's churn rate is gonna go even higher from capping their unlimited plan.

Commercial WiMax Launches in September in Baltimore

BaltimoreI'm personally pumped up about this. I have a feeling Sprint may be able to walk the path of light was more...or maybe the path of a matchlight at least. WiMax for the average joe in Baltmore this September. That's just around the corner. What will the pricing be like? It has to be competitive with mobile broadband prices and definitely cable/DSL prices.

It seems like they're aiming to have a nationwide launch by the end of the year. Just about when AT&T will be done making their mega 7.2Mbps upgrades to their 3G network.
